Day 5: Restaurant Review

Review of The Mixx
by Luke

The Mixx is a great place to enjoy a nice lunch with your friends. The service is great for everyone because it only takes a few minutes to prepare your food, unlike at some restaurants as nice as The Mixx.

If you get there around 11:15, you can get seated earlier, but at noon--because of the great food--it gets a lot harder to get a seat. The atmosphere gets pretty loud around noon because of the lunch rush, but it is still calm.

The interior design is something to be proud of, and the tables and chairs look exceptionally modern as well. The sandwich I ate was really good, but I think the salad could be even better because the line was three times longer for salad than for sandwiches. My classmate Ethan likes the Caesar salad a lot, but he thought the lemonade was too sour.

The Country Club sandwich was great. The bacon is woody. It brings me back to the campfire I was at as a Boy Scout. The Dijon mustard puts a kick of sweetness into my sandwich, just like fresh lemonade. The lettuce was cold and fresh, just like an iced water. The ham and turkey were both tender and juicy. And finally, the tomatoes were nice, fresh and in season, which made them super good.

The prices were right on the money and totally worth it. The sandwiches are much better than Subway Melts. I would recommend this to people who love salads and sandwiches on a great day to go out and have a nice lunch.

Service: B+

Quality: A

Price: On average an entree is 8-10 dollars and a side is 2-5 dollars.

Overall Grade: A-

A= Awesome

B= Great

C= Fair

D= Not Great

F= Horrible

Day 4: KCUR

Teacher’s note: On Thursday, students listened to podcasts and discussed the attributes that make professional podcasts successful. Then they created their own podcasts, focusing on a topic meaningful to them. Students practiced monitoring their volume, pitch, and speed to optimize their vocal deliveries. Here is Luke's podcast:

Later that day, students toured KCUR studios in Kansas City. As their kind and knowledgeable host, Donna Vestal—director of content strategy—provided background information on public radio introduced the students to KCUR announcer Linda Sher.

Director of Community Engagement Ron Jones then had each student record a promo for the popular KCUR program Up To Date. You can hear Luke's promo below.

Day 3: KCPT

Teacher's Note: On Wednesday, students took a tour of the KCPT studios in Kansas City. They stood underneath the tallest freestanding tower in North America and gazed in wonder at the Guinness World Record-holder for largest ball of videotape. Additionally, students learned what distinguishes public television from its commercial counterpart. With those differences in mind, each student wrote and directed a public service announcement. Here is Luke's.

Day 2: KU School of Journalism

MEDIA MANIA VISITS KU SCHOOL OF JOURNALISM

LAWRENCE, Kan. — Touring the School of Journalism at the University of Kansas on June 7, seven students from Barstow's Media Mania camp wanted to learn more about journalism. KU Academic Advisor Ashley Gomez led the students on the tour. She said that she has been working at the University of Kansas for about three years after completing her schooling there.

When Mrs. Gomez was a student, she helped others out and was officially hired in 2012. Ms.Vicki Reyes also assisted on the tour; this was only her second day working at the University of Kansas.

Camper Ethan said that he really enjoyed the tour. Though he said he does not want to have a career in media, his favorite part was walking around campus.

According to everyone interviewed, the tour was a great experience.

Day 1: The Jungle Book Movie Review

A Review of The Jungle Book
by Luke W.

The Jungle Book features a boy named Mowgli (Neel Sethi), who was raised by wolves because his original father was killed by a tiger named Shere Khan (Idris Elba). A panther saw what happened and came to recover Mowgli. The panther's named was Bagheera (Ben Kingsley).

Once that happened, Mowgli was in the hands of the wolves and the pack leader Akela (Giancarlo Esposito). They taught him the ways of the wolves and how to fight. After a few years, Shere Khan comes back for Mowgli and wants to kill him. Akela tells him to go back to the man village and be a normal person again. Mowgli runs away despite wanting to stay. He wants to find food and gives some to a few critters. The critters take the food and bring him to a snake, Kaa (Scarlett Johansson) that almost kills him.

Then a bear named Baloo (Bill Murray) saves Mowgli's life.  To return the favor, Baloo orders Mowgli to climb a cliff to get honey for the bear. Once Bagheera finds out, he is very upset, and Baloo tells Mowgli to leave, insulting him. An ape named King Louie (Christopher Walken) captures Mowgli. He escapes, but he runs into the tiger.

I'll stop there and won't say anything else to spoil it.

The remake of Disney's The Jungle Book is a very well written and acted movie. I would recommend this movie to many people because of the action involved. If you have seen the original Jungle Book, you would know the plot already, but if you have not seen it yet, then it will leave you with many questions that will soon be answered.

The actors did a great job voicing all of the characters, and Mowgli, was acted well by Neel Sethi. I am especially proud of the director (Jon Favreau), who did great job with the CGI. The effects were very well done, and I think the money on those effects was spent well.

I would see this movie for sure if I were you because of the plot twists and action of the movie. The remake is very similar to the original, and it is also much like Tarzan. It is one of the much better remakes in the movies and the best one right now based on other reviews, so you should go out and see it. A-
